Best Free Family Tree Maker in 2026

In short: A free family tree maker is only useful if the free plan lets you build, share and print. KinBranch is free up to 150 people with no signup, imports and exports GEDCOM, gives relatives an interactive view-only link without an account, and prints a Letter or A4 PDF free. Larger posters (up to 36×48") are $7.99 once; Family Plus ($5.99/mo or $39/yr) adds photos on shared links, co-editing and 5,000 people.

How we judged free family tree makers

We checked each tool's public pages in November 2026 against what people actually need:

  • Can you build a tree without creating an account?
  • How many people does the free plan allow?
  • Can relatives open an interactive link without signing up?
  • Is GEDCOM import and export included?
  • Can you download a printable PDF without paying?

Where KinBranch is strongest

Building, sharing and a printable PDF all work on the free plan, and the tree stays in your browser until you choose to share it. GEDCOM files are parsed locally and never uploaded.

Where other tools are stronger

Record-search sites such as FamilySearch, Ancestry and MyHeritage connect your tree to historical records and DNA matches. KinBranch is a chart and sharing tool: it does not search records or offer DNA tests.
